Magnetorheological elastomers as multifuctional materials for biomedical devices and applications
Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are activa materials composed of a polymeric matrix and an inorganic magnetic filler. Their rheological and mechanical characteristics can be actuated remotely by using a magnetic field. Thus, they are highly interesting for biomedical applications in which power delivery to several devices could be a limiting factor, including medical tools such as stents or catheters. Further, they are compatible with additive manufacturing techniques, which renders the fabrication process much more convenient. In this work, we focus on how the magnetic properties of the inorganic filler affect the magnetic, mechanical, thermal, structural and magnetorheological characteristics of the samples, and highlight some potential applications in the biomedical field.
